Best Things to Do in Puerto Plata on a Cruise Stop: Amber Cove & Taino Bay Guide (2026)

Waterfalls, beaches, a colorful historic center and how to plan a private shore day that gets you back to the ship with time to spare.

Blog · By the Junior Martinez Transfers & Tours team · Updated October 2026 · 9 min read

Puerto Plata is one of the most rewarding cruise stops in the Caribbean. In a single day you can stand on the walls of a 16th-century Spanish fort, swim in natural pools at the bottom of a waterfall canyon, and still have time for fresh fish on a turquoise beach. The catch is time: most ships give you a few hours ashore, and the best spots are spread along the coast.

That's why a little planning goes a long way. Knowing which port you're docking at, how far each attraction really is, and how you'll get there and back makes the difference between a rushed day and a great one. Many cruise passengers choose a private driver for exactly this reason: you set the pace, you skip the big tour buses, and you can change plans if the weather or your mood shifts.

Junior Martinez Transfers & Tours is a locally owned private transportation service based in Sosúa that drives visitors across Puerto Plata and the North Coast every day. This guide is the advice we give our own guests before they step off the ship.

Amber Cove vs. Taino Bay: What's the Difference?

Puerto Plata has two separate cruise terminals. They are several miles apart, and your experience of the day starts with which one your ship uses.

Amber Cove Cruise Port

Amber Cove sits on Maimón Bay, west of downtown Puerto Plata. It was built for Carnival Corporation brands, so it's the port you'll most likely use on lines in that group.

  • Pools, a lazy river, bars and restaurants inside the terminal
  • Shops, a welcome area and excursion desks
  • Roughly a 15–25 minute drive to the historic center, depending on traffic

Taino Bay Cruise Port

Taino Bay opened in late 2021 right beside the city's historic district, which makes it ideal if you want to see Puerto Plata itself.

  • Pool area, restaurants, shopping and leisure spaces
  • The historic center is close enough that some visitors walk
  • A convenient starting point for city sightseeing and private excursions

Important: Amber Cove and Taino Bay are different locations. Always check your cruise itinerary or ask your ship to confirm the docking port before arranging a pickup — a driver waiting at the wrong terminal costs you precious time.

01

Damajagua Waterfalls

Known locally as the 27 Charcos, Damajagua is a river canyon near Imbert where you hike through tropical forest, then climb, jump and slide through a chain of natural pools. Visits are led by local guides, who provide helmets and life jackets.

  • Best for active travelers who are comfortable in water
  • Bring water shoes and a change of clothes
  • The number of falls open and the routes offered depend on river conditions on the day

Puerto Plata City Tour

Puerto Plata's historic center is compact, photogenic and full of Victorian-era wooden houses painted in bright Caribbean colors. A private city tour lets you linger where you like.

  • Fort San Felipe — a Spanish colonial fortress overlooking the ocean
  • Umbrella Street — the colorful canopy everyone photographs
  • Paseo de Doña Blanca — a lively pedestrian lane of murals and cafés
  • Central Park — the square around the gazebo and the cathedral
  • Amber Museum — Dominican amber and the story of the region's best-known gem

03

Sosúa Beach

Sosúa Bay is a sheltered horseshoe of calm, turquoise water east of Puerto Plata, with beach restaurants, vendors and a laid-back local vibe. It's where Junior is based, so it's a route we drive every day.

  • Swimming and snorkeling on the reef when sea conditions allow
  • Fresh seafood and cold drinks steps from the sand
  • Private transportation is the simplest way there; plan for a longer drive from Amber Cove than from Taino Bay

04

Playa Dorada

Just east of the city, Playa Dorada is a long golden-sand beach backed by resorts and a golf course. It's an easy, relaxing choice for couples and families who mainly want sun and sea.

  • Short drive from Taino Bay; a little longer from Amber Cove
  • Restaurants and beach services nearby
  • Resort pools and facilities are for hotel guests; day passes, where offered, must be arranged with the resort directly

Dominican Countryside Adventures

Head inland and the scenery changes to sugarcane, cacao and small rural communities. Buggy and ATV excursions, run by local operators where available, are a muddy and memorable way to see it.

  • Junior can arrange private transportation to and from the activity

Private Shore Excursions vs. Cruise Line Tours

Both options can give you a great day. The right one depends on how much flexibility you want and how comfortable you are managing your own timing.

Private excursionCruise line tour
ItineraryPersonalized; add or skip stops as you goFixed program for the whole group
VehiclePrivate vehicle for your party onlyShared bus or van
CommunicationDirect contact with your driver on WhatsAppThrough the ship's excursion desk
PricingQuote agreed in advance for your vehiclePer-person price set by the cruise line
Return to shipYour responsibility to plan a safe bufferShip generally waits if its own tour runs late

Private excursions are especially popular with couples, families with kids and small groups of friends, because the price is per vehicle rather than per person and nobody has to wait for a bus of forty strangers.

Know the trade-off: excursions you book independently usually don't carry the cruise line's return-to-ship protection. If you're late, the ship may not wait. Nobody can guarantee road conditions, so build in a generous buffer and plan to be back well before all-aboard time.

Example 6-Hour Puerto Plata Cruise Itinerary

Here's how a relaxed private day could look for a ship docking in the morning. This is an illustrative schedule only. Your real timing depends on your ship's itinerary, your docking port, traffic and conditions on the day, and your all-aboard deadline.

  1. Meet your private driverat the pickup point you confirmed in advance.
  2. Explore historic Puerto PlataUmbrella Street, Paseo de Doña Blanca and Central Park.
  3. Fort San Felipe and local landmarksOcean views, photos and a bit of colonial history.
  4. Dominican lunch or refreshmentsTry a local plate, fresh juice or a coffee.
  5. Beach time or more sightseeingA nearby beach such as Playa Dorada, or another stop you choose.
  6. Start heading backtoward your cruise port.
  7. Arrive near the cruise terminalwith time to spare before all-aboard.

Our rule of thumb: decide your "must be back" time first, then plan the day backward from it with a comfortable margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Puerto Plata worth visiting on a cruise?

Yes. Few Caribbean ports combine a historic colonial town, waterfalls, mountains and several very different beaches within a short drive. Even a half-day private tour shows you far more than the area around the terminal.

What's the difference between Amber Cove and Taino Bay?

They are two separate cruise terminals. Amber Cove is on Maimón Bay, west of downtown, and is used mainly by Carnival Corporation brands. Taino Bay is right next to the historic center of Puerto Plata. Confirm which one your ship uses before booking a pickup.

Can I book a private tour outside the cruise terminal?

Yes. Many passengers arrange a private driver in advance and meet at an agreed pickup point. Just remember that independently booked tours usually don't include the cruise line's return-to-ship protection, so plan a generous time buffer.

Can I visit Sosúa Beach during a cruise stop?

Usually, yes, if your ship is in port long enough. Sosúa is east of Puerto Plata, so the drive is shorter from Taino Bay than from Amber Cove. Travel times vary with traffic, so ask Junior for a realistic estimate for your date.

How far is Amber Cove from Puerto Plata?

Amber Cove is a few miles west of downtown. Under normal conditions the drive to the historic center is often around 15–25 minutes, but it can take longer with traffic or road works, so treat any estimate as approximate.

How do I book private transportation from the cruise port?

Message Junior on WhatsApp with your ship, docking port, arrival date, number of passengers and the places you'd like to see. You'll get a quote and a confirmed pickup point before your cruise.
